Last year’s winner Primoz Roglic won the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España for professional cyclists and improved to second place in the overall standings. The 30-year-old Slovenian from the Jumbo-Visma team was able to prevail on Wednesday after 164 kilometers from Logroño to the mountain finish on the Alto de Moncalvillo with a 13-second lead over the overall leader Richard Carapaz from Ecuador.

Roglic was able to break away from the top group 750 meters from the finish and is now only 13 seconds behind Carapaz in the overall standings. Third place, 28 seconds behind Roglic, went to Irishman Dan Martin, who was third behind Roglic and Carapaz on the 1,489 meter high Alto de Moncalvillo. Roglic had already won the start of the 75th Tour of Spain, but had to surrender the red jersey of the overall leader to Carapaz after the sixth stage of the day.
Meanwhile, Roglic has to do without one of his most important helpers in the project to defend his title. The Dutchman Tom Dumoulin no longer started the eighth stage. “I felt tired even before the start of the Vuelta, and this feeling has stayed. It makes no sense for me to continue,” tweeted the Giro winner and time trial world champion of 2017 and added: “Then I would be with one going into the next season too much. ”
The ninth stage leads on Thursday over 157.7 kilometers from Castrillo del Val to Auilar de Campoo. For Germany’s top sprinter Pascal Ackermann there could be a chance to win his first Vuelta stage win.
