Roglic in the red jersey again after a time trial victory

In contrast to the Tour de France, when he lost his overall victory in the time trial, Primoz Roglic was able to fully demonstrate his qualities in the fight against the clock at the Vuelta and with a win again took the lead in the overall standings.

45 days after his bitter knockout at the Tour de France, Primoz Roglic proved his time trial qualities at the Vuelta and snatched the red jersey of the overall winner again. The Slovenian professional cyclist won over 33.7 kilometers from Muros to Mirador de Ézaro on Tuesday in 46:39 minutes, thus clearing the greatest rival and so far overall first Richard Carapaz from Ecuador by 49 seconds.

Roglic is now 39 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 47 seconds ahead of Brit Hugh Carthy in the overall standings. This means that the former ski jumper has the best chance of winning the Vuelta, as in the previous year. At the tour, Roglic lost the yellow jersey to his compatriot Tadej Pogacar in the last time trial on the penultimate day and gave up the apparently certain victory.

This time Roglic showed no nerve. The Slovenian had divided his forces perfectly and won on the final climb with a second ahead of the American Will Barta. “It’s been a while since I won a time trial. But it went very well. I had very good legs. I will give everything to win the Vuelta,” said Roglic.

Sütterlin in the top ten – Steimle sets the tone

German drivers could not intervene in the decision, but Jasha Sütterlin (Sunweb) in particular showed a good performance in tenth place. Jannik Steimle (Deceuninck-QuickStep) also attracted attention as 14th.

Meanwhile, all 681 Corana tests of the drivers, team members and officials from the second day of rest were negative. This means that the Vuelta can continue its journey towards Madrid as planned.

On Wednesday the 14th stage leads 204.7 kilometers from Lugo to Ourense. Three mountains in the third category shouldn’t bring about any major changes in the overall ranking.
