In Saturday’s final 6th stage, he took second place, when at the very end he voluntarily left the triumph to a colleague from the escape, the Frenchman David Gaudu from the Groupama-FDJ stable.
The third place in the stage belonged to Spanish Alejandro Valverde from Movistar with a gap of 35 seconds.
Race leader Brandon McNulty from the USA had a bad day before the final stage. Even with the help of the entire UAE Team Emirates team, he could not catch the escape of the group of favorites and finally dropped out of the top ten of the final standings.
48 km before the finish line, after a difficult climb to Krabelin (length 5 km, average slope 9.5%), Roglič found himself at the forefront in the company of only two rivals, which were Gaudu and Hugh Carthy from EF Education-Nippo.
The Brit dropped off during the final ascent to Usartz, which was 4.6 km long and had an average slope of 8.6%. The Slovenian then repaid the Frenchman for cooperating with him in the escape and did not fight him for victory in the stage after the agreement.
In the final stage, the drivers of the Bora-Hansgrohe team did not succeed. Emanuel Buchmann was in front of her in 6th place, in the end he was also missing in the top ten in the overall ranking.
With a five-minute loss, the German racer finished in 13th place (he finished 16th on Saturday).
“I am very happy that I was able to succeed today. It is one of the biggest victories of my career. The stage was very difficult.
I was very motivated, I wanted to leave everything on the track. Of course, Primož Roglič had a great deal of credit for my championship, “the 24-year-old Frenchman, who has already managed to win the Vuelte stage twice, was happy after the Eurosport stage.
