ANGELHOLM. Rögle swept the series winner and gold favorite Färjestad 4–0 in matches in the quarterfinals.
It is the third time in history that the team has not won a quarter-final match in the SM play-offs.
– We are not ready by a long shot, says Rögle’s Linus Sandin.
Only series winners Djurgården in 1995 (best of five games) and HV71 in 2011 have previously failed to win a single quarter-final match.
Rögle turned around and won the fourth quarter-final match at home against Färjestad.
– We show really good character in the team. We feel strong and show this, says Rögle forward Linus Sandin.
For the second game in a row, extra time was needed for Rögle to win.
The hero of the match was Henry Bowlby who decided 4.52 into the first overtime period
Rifalk: “Magic”
With 2.16 left in the third period, Daniel Zaar equalized in the desperate Rögle press.
Henrik Björklund had given Färjestad the lead in the second period when he headed in a pass from Joel Nyström.
It is also the third time in history that a team from the round of 16 advances to the SC semi-finals.
Goalkeeper Christoffer Rifalk pays tribute to the fans after Wednesday night’s victory.
– It’s magical. We know they’re great, but it’s unbelievable that they live up to expectations.
Växjö awaits: “Everything to win”
Now Rögle faces Växjö in the semi-finals.
– We still have everything to win. We have found a new strength in being able to win crap games now. It is important for us to have that feeling, says Rifalk.
Previously, only Linköping in 2014 and Malmö in 2017 succeeded in that feat.
