SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Unseeded Shelby Rogers defeated ninth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the San Jose tournament on Saturday.
The American will face another Russian in the final this Sunday, Daria Kasatkina, the seventh seed in this hard-court tournament that is preparatory for the US Open.
Rogers is seeking her first WTA singles title. Kasatkina advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Paula Badosa, second seed and fourth in the world rankings.
The hosts trailed 4-3 in the second set, before breaking twice. He won three games in a row to define the match.
For life, Rogers is 2-1 against Kudermetova.
Kasatkina defeated Badosa for the second time in three duels.
