Invited by the organizers of the Masters 1000 in Shanghai, Roger Federer provided some details about his new life, in particular his way of playing sport and consuming tennis.
Winner of the Shanghai Masters 1000 in 2014 and 2017, Roger Federer was the guest of honor at the Chinese tournament a few days ago, which was returning to the calendar after four years of absence. The man with 20 Grand Slam tournaments gave the ATP website some anecdotes about his new retired life, at 42 years old. He spoke in particular about his relationship with sport, he who is no longer obliged to train, but continues to maintain training all the same.
“I try to go to the gym four times a week, which I can’t believe. At home, I installed machines that I received literally the week after the Laver Cup in London (where he retired, in September 2022, editor’s note). It’s like after my career, I finally had a gym. It’s a little weird having it once I retire, so now I have to use it. So I do this well. I don’t play much tennis anymore so I have to be a little more careful about what I eat and all that. I would still like to do some exhibitions later. So I want to stay in shape. I do everything. Cardio, a little weight training. Then more basic exercises, mostly, which is also good for the back. You must be careful. I think that when you move less, your body hurts more. So I think moving a little bit is always a good thing. It makes me feel better, that’s for sure. »
“I follow the results almost daily”
Roger Federer also confided that he still follows tennis results very closely, even if he cannot necessarily watch the matches in full. “I follow the results almost daily. I like to see what happens. Especially the strong moments. I go on YouTube and watch the four or five minute highlights to get a feel for the match, a little bit more. It’s difficult for me to attend the matches, simply because I don’t have time. With the kids (his twins are 14, his twins are 9, editor’s note) and everything that’s going on in my life, it’s hard to say: “Okay, that day, I’ll watch this match.”
For the Wimbledon final, I only saw a few games that day because we were running around with the kids and doing things. Then at one point I quickly watched, just to say, “Okay, I saw a little bit of the Wimbledon final.” » Of course I was curious, I checked the scores from time to time, but for me it’s hard to sit down. I was happy that the match was as great as it was and I love when great stories come out of the game.” And with Alcaraz, there should be great stories for many years to come…
