Roger Federer’s Journey to Becoming a Professional Tennis Player: Insights from GQ Germany Interview

During a long interview given to GQ Germany In partnership with his sponsor, Mercedes‐Benz, Roger Federer looked back on the period when he began to realize he could become a professional player.

” It’s a good question. Early in my career, I was told pretty quickly that I was actually very good at what I did. At first, it’s difficult to assess and you don’t really dare to believe it. And as soon as we gain a little more confidence and say to ourselves that maybe I’m really good, we get a slap on the wrist, we can be sure of that (laughs). When you’re young, you already go through an alternation of emotions anyway, and if you add to that a career in competitive sport, you really have to take care of yourself. When I was 14, I left home to go to a performance center. These were probably the most important two years of my life. I have learned so much for life. At 16, I decided to quit school. For a few months, I still tried my hand at online teaching, but I quickly understood that both were not possible and that I had to put all the chances on my side. I made a deal with my parents: give tennis a realistic chance and, if that didn’t work, return to school immediately and without complaint. What can I say, something happened (laughs). »
