Peter Lundgren celebrated great success as a tennis professional and coach. Now he is shocking his fans with terrible news. Roger Federer’s ex-coach has lost his left lower leg.
He led the young Roger Federer (42) to his first Wimbledon triumph in 2003. Now Peter Lundgren (58) has to cope with a severe blow of fate.
The former tennis professional, who coached not only Federer but also stars such as Marat Safin (43), Stan Wawrinka (38) and Grigor Dimitrow (32), has lost his left lower leg.
Roger Federer: Peter Lundgren posts amputation picture from the hospital
It all started with a painful but seemingly harmless injury that Lundgren suffered in early September 2023. But after breaking his ankle, an infection developed in the joint of his left leg. The Swede reported his health problems on Facebook as early as mid-September. “I will be in the hospital for a long time to have the infection treated,” Lundgren wrote.
What was particularly hard for him was that he had to give up his beloved gray parrot, Peppo, because of his long hospital stay. The bird is now with a new family, Lundgren said.
About a month later, the next piece of bad news came: Lundgren’s left foot could no longer be saved. His bandaged leg can be seen in a photo he shared on Facebook from the hospital on Sunday (October 15, 2023). The knee and thigh are bandaged, the rest of the leg is missing.
“Since I have type 2 diabetes and therefore poor circulation, the infection in my broken ankle has not healed,” explained Lundgren, who is, however, positive: “Now I feel good again. Rehab will begin soon and for me it’s time to give it my all.”
Lundgren was active as a player on the ATP tour in the eighties and nineties and won three tournaments. The Swede made it to number 25 in the world rankings and then embarked on a successful career as a coach. In 2000 he was hired by the then 18-year-old Federer and remained his coach for three years. During this time, Federer celebrated his first Grand Slam title – 19 more were to follow. Lundgren most recently looked after the young Swiss Dominic Stricker (21) as an advisor.
