Federer on his return to Wimbledon as a spectator
“Last year, I walked on Center Court for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of this legendary court.
It was beautiful but painful. I was hurt. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to play again, so it was a very emotional moment. But this year was totally different.
My dad whispered to me, “Wouldn’t you like to play on the court instead of sitting around watching? I said to him, I’m happy to watch and enjoy tennis.” It was great fun to sit next to the princess.
I know her quite well. She is a big tennis fan and she plays herself. Sometimes you have to be careful not to talk too much. You can talk, then it’s super quiet, and then you have to clap,” Federer told The New York Times. At the start of the year, there were strong rumors that Federer would be part of the BBC’s coverage team. for Wimbledon 2023.
In the end, nothing happened as Federer didn’t feel ready to commentate games in his first year after retiring.
