Roger Federer’s Dominant Win in Montreal 2017 – A Masterclass in 54 minutes

Roger Federer Masterclass – Win in Montreal in 54 minutes

Roger Federer turned 36 in 2017, but his tennis was as good as ever! The Swiss opened with victory in Montreal against the local favourite, beating Peter Polansky in two quick sets.

Federer skipped the second part of the 2016 season due to a knee injury. The Swiss came back stronger a year later to embrace a season to remember and his best season in years.

Federer won 54 of 59 matches in 2017, claiming seven titles and two Majors, tasting victory on the notable scene for the first time since 2012! A few weeks before his 36th birthday, the Swiss captured his record eighth Wimbledon crown without dropping a set. Roger built momentum and returned to action in Montreal a couple of weeks later.

Federer picked up where he left off at the All England Club and beat Peter Polansky 6-2 6-1 in just 54 minutes to start winning. The 116th-ranked Canadian entered the draw on a wild card and he faced a 19-time Major winner in Roger’s first match in Montreal since 2011.

Federer dropped 12 points in eight service games, fending off two break point chances in the fifth game of the second set and stealing his opponent’s serve four times to control the pace and run over the top.

Roger Federer lost three games against Peter Polansky in Montreal 2017.

Polansky played in three consecutive Challenger finals that summer.

However, that was not enough to challenge such a strong opponent, especially after serving at 42%. The Swiss got off to a perfect start, winning the opening set 6-2 in 21 minutes. Federer held with an ace in the first game of the match and broke fast to go up 2-0 after a double fault from Peter. In the third game, Roger held serve and built a 3-0 lead in six minutes.

The Canadian took the lead with a serve winner in the fourth game and nailed a dropshot at 1-4 to stay within a break. The Swiss clinched game seven with another perfect dropshot and broke through with a game-winning volley a few minutes later to make it 6-2.

In the second game of the second set, Roger took the lead with a winning shot and a few minutes later with a service winner. Polansky conceded a forehand into the net in the fourth game, lost serve and trailed even further behind, he rallied and created two break chances in the next.

Roger saved them with winners, keeping his serve intact and bringing the game home with an ace for a 5-0 lead. Polansky erased match points in the sixth game to avoid a bagel, and Federer closed out the next one to 15 to seal the deal and advance to the third round. Roger Federer made history in Canada, a player who wowed wherever he played and who, after retiring last year at the Laver Cup, now he enjoys his life and tennis in different exhibition events.
