It has been 13 months since the last official match played by Roger Federer. The Semifinal at the 2020 Australian Open was the last time he was seen before his second extended hiatus since he debuted in the penultimate year of the 20th century.
The confirmed return of the ‘Swiss express’ on the ATP 250 in Doha, scheduled for March 8-14, comes with a host of doubts. The two interventions that he underwent on his right knee took him longer to recover than budgeted, coupled with his 39 years of age who increasingly weigh on his aspirations to continue increasing his Grand Slams record.
The previous time Federer was absent from the ATP circuit for several months was in the 2017 season. He returned to Melbourne and won the Australian Open for the fifth time when his record for ‘greats’ had stalled at 17.
‘His Majesty’ had once again broken the myths in white sports and the fact of continuing to dominate the circuit with 36 years. He did not settle for one, and added another Wimbledon to his record and successfully defended his crown in the first Grand Slam of the season.
Roger plans to return to Doha and then make one of his favorite stops in Dubai, before embarking on the grassy tour with his sights set on Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics.
