Roger Federer fails in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon against Hubert Hurkacz
It was the first time the 24-year-old Polish tennis star reached the quarterfinals, while Federer celebrated his 18th.
If the eight-time champion’s elimination was a surprise, the manner in which it occurred was even more so – Hurkacz triumphed in three sets – 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-0.
The 39-year-old Federer was aiming to become the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in the Open era, but he was a shadow of the player who graced Center Court for so many years.
The Swiss star made 31 unforced errors, Hurkacz just 12.
Federer underwent two knee operations in 2020 and was aiming for a ninth Wimbledon title on his favorite grass court.
In June, after his third round win against Dominik Koepfer, he retired from the French Open pulled back to protect his knee.
Federer’s defeat on Wednesday was only his 14th in 119 matches at Wimbledon and his first straight set defeat at the grass-court Grand Slam since 2002, the year before his first championship there.
“I noticed the mistakes, the unfortunate-looking points from Roger and of course the last set, 6-0,” three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker told the BBC.
The goal is to play
When asked by the media if he was thinking about retiring, Federer replied that he was not thinking about quitting.
“No, it’s just about having a perspective,” Federer told reporters. “You need a goal when you go through rehab like I did.
“You can’t climb the whole mountain at once. You have to go in steps. Wimbledon was the first big step.
“Now that this is over, you have to reevaluate everything. You have to sit down, talk about what went well, what didn’t go so well, where is the body, where is the knee, where is the mind?
“I just have to talk to the team, take my time, not focus on you [den Medien] or let someone else rush you. I have to take my time and make the right decision, the decision that I want to make and that I feel most comfortable with.
“That’s the point at which it leaves me. But no, I don’t hope that will happen. The goal is of course to play.”
Hurkacz will play his first Grand Slam semi-final – he is only the second Pole to reach the last four at Wimbledon, after Jerzy Janowicz in 2013.
The Pole will face Italian Matteo Berrettini on Friday, while Novak Djokovic faces Denis Shapovalov in the other semi-final.
Chasing his 20th Grand Slam title, Djokovic defeated Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday, while Canada’s Shapovalov defeated Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4, 3-6, Defeated 5:7, 6:1, 6:4.
Meanwhile, Berrettini prevailed against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Italian won in four sets 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-3.
