Roger Federer, 20-time Grand Slam winner and living tennis legend, has just made his long-awaited comeback after a 13-month hiatus. The Swiss defeated Britain’s Daniel Evans at the ATP 250 tournament in Doha, and at the same time he unveiled his new pair of tennis shoes made by the brand On. The Roger Pro is its very first competitive tennis shoe. Previously, he wore Nike (his former sponsor) during matches.
The project was created from 3D scans of Federer’s feet. The details were then developed through sensory feedback. The pair is the result of a reinterpretation of On’s iconic racing technology. “ Tennis players put up to three times their body weight through a shoe during lateral movements », Explains Olivier Bernhard, co-founder of On. So a tennis shoe needs the cushioning of a running shoe, but it also needs to provide some stability. THE ROGER PRO contains a soft foam midsole for comfort, a midfoot cage and a rounded outsole for smooth transitions.
For now, THE ROGER PRO is a one-off model designed exclusively for Federer’s use on the court but the athlete and On will likely release tennis-centric products in the coming months.
