Roger Federer Retirement Documentary: A Personal Journey

Roger Federer said goodbye to professional tennis in September 2022, but he has a big surprise in store for his millions of fans: an intimate documentary on the end of his career. Before retiring, the winner of twenty grand slam tournaments had planned to film the preparation for his last matches, in particular the doubles match with Rafael Nadal during the Laver Cup in London, in September 2022. Amateur filming on his 12 last days of tennis player, originally intended for those close to him and not for the general public.

Roger Federer, now 42, was never a big fan of public exposure, but he kept the camera rolling even in his hotel room and at home.

“Initially, the idea was to immortalize the last moments of my professional tennis career so that I could show them later to my family and friends. Throughout my career, I have tended to avoid having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in letting the camera roll, because it was never intended for the audience. However, we captured so many powerful moments that it turned into a deeply personal journey,” he explained in a statement.

An echo around the world

If the Swiss champion has already been entitled to a documentary by Roxane Schlumberger in 2023, this time, he has notably called on British director Asif Kapadia. A wise choice since Asif Kapadia not only directed the Oscar-winning biopic Amydedicated to Amy Winehouse (2015), but he also proved his interest in sport with the award-winning Senna (in 2010, about racing driver Ayrton Senna) and the acclaimed Diego Maradona (on the Argentinian football legend), in 2019.

The documentary on Roger Federer, the title of which has not yet been disclosed, will be broadcast exclusively on Prime Video. In this regard, the champion expressed his satisfaction in knowing that “the history of [s]”The last days in tennis will resonate with fans of the sport and a wider audience around the world.”

The film will also feature interviews with Roger Federer’s most famous rivals, including Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. According to Bloomberg, the documentary could be released around the time of Wimbledon (July 1 to 14, 2024). And tennis fans remember that Roger Federer won this tournament eight times, a feat never equaled among tennis players.
