Roger Federer pushes through: “But I don’t know if I’ll play 1/8th final” | Roland Garros

Federer, who will turn 40 in early August, underwent two surgeries on his right knee in 2020. Roland Garros is his first Grand Slam tournament in 16 months. He didn’t return until March and the 20-time grand slam winner hasn’t played much since then.

With Wimbledon in mind later this month, Federer wants to use his common sense. The Italian Matteo Berrettini awaits in the 1/8th final in Paris, but he may receive the match as a gift.

“I don’t know if I will play,” Federer said last night. “I have to decide whether to continue or not. Isn’t it too risky (for the knee, ed.) to continue? Isn’t it the right time to take a rest?”, he asked himself a few questions at the press conference.

Federer plans to launch his grass season in Halle on June 14. “After every match I have to evaluate my situation, see what state I wake up in the next morning and how my knee is doing. That may be even more necessary after such a long game like tonight.”
