Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, hung up the racket more than a year ago but he closely follows everything that happens on the ATP professional circuit.
Federer during a publicity event in Munich as an ambassador for the Mercedes brand, was asked about the 2023 US Open and got wet choosing his favorite to lift the title at Arthur Ashe.
“I would bet on Novak Djokovic. It’s a safe bet.”said the Swiss.
Federer did not bet on a Carlos Alcaraz who has before him the opportunity to equal the Swiss himself as the first player to revalidate the title in New York since 2008, and opted for one of his great historical rivals along with Rafa Nadal.
“Novak obviously can play extremely well on all surfaces. He always brings a certain level of play, which is very high, so to beat him you have to give your best.Yo. He is a great player” he recounted.
Djokovic will face local promise Ben Shelton in the semifinals, while Carlos Alcaraz awaits the hard rock of the reborn Alexander Zverev to continue advancing in the tournament and have the opportunity to undo Federer’s bet.
Djokovic breaks Federer’s record
The Serbian Djokovic, No. 2 in the ATP world ranking, who will return to No. 1 next Monday, achieved another record with his victory over local Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
With that victory, the Serbian reached 183 semifinals in the professional circuit (it is the fourth best figure). and he had the pleasure of being the man with the most semifinals in the Grand Slam, now reaching No. 47 of his career.

So far, the Balkan is the owner of the individual men’s records of 23 Grand Slam titles and 35 finals played. In conquests, he leads one to the Spanish Rafael Nadal and three to the retired Federer, while in definitions he surpasses the Swiss by four.
In New York Djokovic reached 47 semifinals counting the four Major. And now he is the only man with more than 85 wins in each of the major tournaments.
