Roger Federer says ‘misunderstanding’ sparked heated debate with chair umpire in French Open victory
The 39-year-old got into a heated argument with the chair umpire after being given a time violation for taking too long between points.
Federer had a long conversation with the judge, clearly confused by the situation. He was then seen asking Cilic questions online.
“I always feel like I’m not making my opponent wait long, but it’s clear that Marin wanted to go faster. I didn’t realize,” Federer said, downplaying the incident.
“I feel like it was a misunderstanding on so many levels. I didn’t understand it or realize it, and I guess I’m new to the new tour.”
“It was pretty interesting to experience. I had a little bit of energy in the game, which I liked.”

The heated debate did not, however, prevent Federer from advancing to the third round of Roland Garros, finally beating Cilic 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) and 6-2.
The Swiss has just recovered from serious knee surgery last year and has only played three times in the last 17 months.
Before the Grand Slam on clay, Federer downplayed his chances of winning the Grand Slam, but in the next round he will face the German Dominik Koepfer, 59th in the world.
