The tennis star had a big accident on the slats a few years ago in a Valais resort. This is what his buddy Marc Rosset told us.

Roger Federer was once again in the spotlight last weekend in Berlin at the Laver Cup, a competition he founded and still organises. The Basel native was able to see that he still has an immense global aura.

But this might never have existed if the skiing accident that the man with twenty Grand Slam titles had, twenty years ago in a famous Valais resort, had been more serious…

It was the former Geneva tennis player and close friend of Federer, Marc Rosset (Olympic champion in 1992), who told this juicy anecdote in the podcast of Tennis Legendend of July.

“One year, when I returned from Australia, I went skiing with Roger for three days in Crans-Montana. He must have been 18 or 19 years old.”

That’s the context. What happened next? Marc Rosset, 11 years older than Federer, was very afraid for his young friend who was a little too reckless on the slats.

“At one point he passes me and hits a bump. He takes off and I think, ‘Shit! This is a disaster!’ Because I see him take off and go backwards.”

After Federer’s heavy fall, Rosset slides to his aid.

“He’s 30 meters below. When I get to him, his body is all over the place. I’m sure he broke something. And then I got scared, because the guy is 18, 19 years old. Can you imagine, if his career is ruined because of that? We wouldn’t have been well and me, in Switzerland, I’m dead…”

The Genevan will breathe a big sigh of relief when Roger Federer answers him, a few seconds later, that “everything is ok”.

This mishap did not, in any case, put the Basel native off skiing. During his career, he explained that he was looking forward to his retirement so that he could strap on his skis with his children.

In this same podcast, Rosset told another anecdote👇

In 2023, he skied for the first time in 15 years – he had given up the activity during his career, in order to avoid injuries – and, earlier this year, he hit the slopes with his friend and former champion Lindsey Vonn. We imagine that at 43, Federer has been a little more cautious than that famous day in Crans-Montana.
