Roger Federer gets off Toronto and Cincinnati

Thursday, August 5, 2021 | The Swiss will not play the next Masters and is in doubt for the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year.

The Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, one of the great absences in the Tokyo Olympics, will not be in the Masters 1000 de Toronto (Canada) and Cincinnati (United States) due to discomfort in his right knee, reported the ATP.

Federer’s absences were announced separately by the organizers of the two events.

The news casts doubt on Federer’s participation in the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year, which will begin on August 30.

Scotsman Andy Murray, Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta, Canadian Milos Raonic and Italian Matteo Berrettini, finalist at Wimbledon, also announced their resignations from Toronto. Novak Djokovic had reported his withdrawal from the event last month.

Toronto’s tournament starts on Monday and Cincinnati on August 16. Federer has won the Cincinnati tournament seven times and has two titles in Canada.

Federer, who will turn 40 this Sunday, played his last match at Wimbledon, in which he said goodbye to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals.

The Swiss had already accused discomfort in the right knee operated to defect from the Games.

Federer underwent two right knee surgeries in 2020 and spent more than a full year between games. He returned to Grand Slam activities at the French Open in late May and withdrew from that tournament after three victories, arguing that he wanted to rest to be ready for the circuit on grass courts – especially Wimbledon.

Before action began at the All England club in late June, Federer was asked about the Olympics, to which the Swiss replied that he would wait until after Wimbledon to decide his game schedule.
