If Novak Djokovic will be able to break numerous records between now and the end of his career, there is no doubt, however, that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will continue to be the two most popular players of the modern era (and perhaps of all ages).
The Swiss and the Spanish, in addition to having created one of the most electrifying rivalries of the 2000s, have managed to bring many young people closer to tennis thanks to their contrasting styles and their class off the court.
By virtue of last year’s umpteenth success at Roland Garros, the Spanish phenomenon equaled Roger with 20 Grand Slam titles, crowning a lengthy chase.
Roger and Rafa have to watch their backs for Djokovic, capable of putting his ninth Australian Open in their showcases, reaching 18 majors. In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda, the world number one among juniors Holger Rune expressed his admiration for Federer and Nadal.
The 17-year-old Dane, who has climbed more than 500 places in the last 12 months, recently made his debut on the main circuit.
Rune: Federer and Nadal have inspired many young people
“I’m a huge fan of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal,” Rune began.
“I am also interested in young promises: Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev come to mind above all. Nadal is perhaps the most challenging player in terms of character.
To be honest, Rafa was my first idol. I had his poster in my room when I was six years old – I dressed like him to every practice, wearing tank tops and a bandana, as well as playing with a Babolat racket.
Then I played a tournament, I was about 7 years old, but I lost in the final and got a smaller cup. It hurt so much to lose that final that I came home and broke all the Nadal posters.
I asked him about Roger Federer’s, because he was number 1 in the world at the time. From there I started to watch all his games, I also changed my racket and clothes. I am sure that these legends have inspired many young people as it has happened to me, ”said Rune.
