Roger Federer is a retired man and a happy man in that situation. The Swiss spend quality time with family and travel all over the world to be able to indulge in his passions, like cinema where we saw him at the Oscars ceremony.

In a recent interview he gave on behalf of CQ sports, the Basel native spoke about current tennis and he thinks that men’s tennis lacks a little inventiveness.

Tennis needs more variety: Federer

The Swiss has always been appreciated for his great elegance and his masterful shots of unparalleled finesse and he thinks that today tennis is a little too automated: ” I like to see characters and I like to see players who are explosive and athletic.

I would like there to be a little more variety and a little more going back and forth to the net, and not just from one side of the baseline to the other. We’ll see how tennis develops, but the problem is when you have a lot of similar players competing against each other, a lot of points end up being played the same way.

And my goal on the tour has always been to think: playing every point the same way against my opponent is what he wants, what he doesn’t want is for me to mix things up and have my tennis be varied.

So, for me, seeing two guys playing against each other and having 20 identical points in the same match… It can be very interesting, it’s like a tug of war, but I like to say: “Let’s not get into a standoff, let’s get into another challenge.”
