Madrid. The former president of the Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero finally broke his silence on the situation in Venezuela, a country to which he has been linked in recent years and to which he attended as an observer in the last presidential elections on July 28. In his first message, the Spanish socialist leader called for “dialogue” and “consensus” to resolve the political crisis and acknowledged that he himself participated in the departure from the country of the opposition candidate Edmundo González, who has been asylum in Spain since two weeks ago. Upon his arrival at the Ateneo in Madrid, the Spanish politician was seriously rebuked by right-wing Venezuelan citizens, who shouted insults such as “traitor” and “son of a bitch.”
Rodríguez Zapatero held his first public event in several months and participated in the presentation of a book about his time in government (2004-2011), Democracy and its Rights, written by his collaborators and coordinated by himself to analyze the social advances during its management. It was also the first time he had been seen since the Venezuelan elections, in which his name has been mentioned by the Spanish and Venezuelan right and extreme right, as they accuse him of “defending” the current Nicolas government. Ripe. And even more so after his intervention in the negotiations for the departure of Edmundo González from the country, after a meeting organized by Rodríguez Zapatero himself, from China, and a collaborator of his in Venezuela, in which the leader’s departure from the country was agreed. opponent with the approval of brothers Jorge and Delcy Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly of Venezuela and vice president of the government, respectively.
Upon his arrival at the Ateneo de Madrid, dozens of media outlets asked the former president about this issue, to which he responded: “When someone mediates, they must be extraordinarily respectful. It is a right and it is a duty to maintain discretion and loyalty to the people who have allowed, who have wanted you to facilitate a task.” And he added that “that is what facilitators do, maintain trust because it is a duty of loyalty, I owe it to the people who have participated. And also because in the future I may have to do a task in Venezuela. I will always try to make that the attitude for that country, because I know from experience how it can help.”
The former Spanish president explained that “I have tried to help for about 10 years. My way of helping is to give hope to Venezuelans through consensus and dialogue. “I am not going to give up that position and I am going to do it discreetly.”
Before entering the premises, about 50 Venezuelan citizens were waiting for him on the street, who insulted him with shouts such as “scoundrel”, “corrupt traitor”, “coward”, “sellout” and “son of a bitch”.
