Manchester City’s Spanish midfielder, Rodrigo Hernández, was awarded the Ballon d’Or in the men’s category for his outstanding performances, both with the Spanish team, when it was crowned champion of the Euro Cup, and with Manchester City when it won the English Premier League.
The 68th edition was held for the first time since 2003 without the names of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among the nominees and without the only two footballers who have taken the award from them in recent years: Luka Modric (2018) and Karim Benzema (2022).
In the women’s branch, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí received recognition as the best player in the world for the second consecutive year, after winning the European Champions League with the Blaugrana team.
“It is important that, like me when I was little, I had male references, children can also have female references. This way they can see equality in society from a young age,” Bonmatí declared in an interview with France Football.
Equality between men and women inside and outside of football is a cause to which Aitana has demonstrated her commitment on numerous occasions.
