Pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie during the Golden Stirrup athletics meeting.
The 34-year-old veteran showed his best performance in the last seven years, the last time he jumped so high in breaking the world record of 616 cm. One week before the European Indoor Championships in Toruń, Lavillenie lured the athletic public into a duel with current world record holder Armand Duplantis. The 21-year-old Swedish talent, who improved his absolute maximum to 618 cm last year, jumped 610 centimeters in Belgrade on Wednesday and also tried 620 twice there.
“This is probably the first time I’ll be in such a competition as an outsider. But an outsider with a performance of 606 … that’s unbelievable,” he said, looking at the duel with Duplantis Lavillenie, who was very happy with the performance at the home meeting. He got over six meters for the second time in the season and added four centimeters to the current maximum. Duplantis succeeded three times (610, 603 and 601). “With the season like this, I can’t wait to be there,” Lavillenie said.
