Rodez’s New Striker Andreas Hountondji Impresses with Two Goals in One Week

With two goals in one week, including the victory at Dunkirk (2-1) on Saturday, the striker who arrived in Rodez this summer seems to have launched his season in earnest.

A week after opening his personal account during Rodez’s success against Angers (4-1), Andreas Hountondji once again shook the nets. The player on loan from Caen scored the winning goal at Dunkirk on Saturday (2-1), with an uncrossed header receiving a cross from Lucas Buadès. “It feels good to score,” admitted the person concerned. “Especially when you’re an attacker, statistics are important.”

By placing himself, at least provisionally, as the most prolific offensive player of the blood and gold, he has dispelled the reservations aroused by his first performances with the Raf, in terms of finishing. Despite promising qualities, such as his activity, his forward ball handling and his athletic potential, the Beninese international failed in the last gesture, missing several clear chances during the first meetings, notably against Laval (0-1 ) and Valenciennes (0-1).

“The priority is that he runs”

“For me, his lack of success was a false debate. Andreas has qualities, he has created a lot of chances since the start of the season. The priority is that he runs, that he tires “the opposing team, he stretches the defenses. I’m very happy for him that he scores,” noted Didier Santini, the Rodez coach, after his rookie’s first goal a week ago. This will give him confidence, because he was determined to score. And when you start with that idea, it’s never easy to get there.”

“It’s good to move on but we must also not forget what happened, so as not to repeat the same mistakes,” notes the 21-year-old. “It’s better for me, but it’s also because collectively we’re progressing,” he adds.

Complementarities to be refined

While he says he feels comfortable in his new locker room, where he claims to have been “very well integrated”, the native of Seine-et-Marne still seems to need time to adapt to fine-tune the complementarities with his new partners. And in particular Killian Corredor, the striker with whom he shared the most playing time at the top of the Ruthenian 3-5-2. But he already claims to enjoy the way blood and gold plays. “I have already played in two-up front systems, so it’s not a problem for me,” he assures. “And if I came to Rodez, it’s to have playing time in a club which suits me.” With certainly the idea of continuing to shake the nets.
