Rödermark: Coalition lets SPD flash when it comes to speed traps

The city councils postpone the decision on traffic controls in the city.

The traffic relief for citizens who live in Rödermark on the main roads is still a long way off. In the most recent parliamentary session, the SPD parliamentary group failed with its request to set up stationary speed cameras on all entry and exit roads and to clarify the locations, number and technical quality of the required measuring devices in advance of the budget consultations in 2021. Instead, the majority of city councilors want to wait for a speed camera concept that the city administration will draw up in the second half of the year.

The Free Voters withdrew their amendment, in which they demanded to dispose of the currently non-functioning speed measurement systems and, where appropriate, to replace them with new, modern devices. “We hope that the topic will be dealt with again at the traffic relief round table,” said parliamentary group leader Peter Schröder.

“The noise-plagued residents cannot expect any remedy from the round table,” said Hidir Karademir (SPD). “The magistrate has to act.” The course for modern speed cameras must now be set, one shouldn’t wait for the next round table meeting in April.

The first city councilor had already made it clear in the committee that it was not permitted to set stationary systems on all entry and exit roads, explained Tobias Kruger (FDP). The measurement results would have to be legally secure, otherwise thousands of notifications could not be valid. He accused the SPD parliamentary group of “resistance to advice”.

Renewing the outdated speed camera columns may not be expedient, explained Mayor Jörg Rotter (CDU), and found mobile speed cameras to be “much more effective”. Stefan Gerl (AL / Grüne) also attested the mobile measuring devices a “surprise effect” and a “great educational effect”. Norbert Schultheis (SPD) saw it differently: A permanently installed speed camera would help in the long term. You could at least decide on these facilities in the meeting. “There is a lack of political will,” he stated. CDU, AL / Greens, Free Voters and SPD nevertheless voted against it.
