Nothing like being 78 years old and being a rocker. And Rod Stewart, the man who has sold nearly 300 million copies of his records, demonstrated it this Friday at the Palacio de los Deportes.
If he took off his golden coat, people would shout; if she ran slightly on the stage, the audience applauded; and if she out there said “Mexico, thanks (Mexico, thanks)”, the clamor broke the decibel needle.
His raspy voice remains intact and he shows it off in “Addictec to love”; she semiflexes her body to dance to “Some guys have all the luck” and goes up and down to the upbeat “Forever Young,” which sounds like her own anthem.
Among the public in the front rows, the green and white striped shirts of Celtic Glasgow stand out, the soccer team of his loves and some Mexican flag that welcomes him.
Few wear the 100-peso shirts that are sold around the so-called Copper Dome, where the “comes, comes” come to ask for up to 200 pesos from those who dare to leave their car in the place.
For the Mexican nocturnal adventure, Rod is accompanied by six chorus girls and the same number of musicians, among which the saxophone player stands out, who has an important participation in several songs.
The central screen of the stage is a show in itself: it can take the singer in a single image, but it is also divided to show what the other actors of the night are doing.
For “Have you ever seen the rain?”, made popular by the group Credence, rain is projected on top of Rod’s image, bathed in blue light, to give the sensation of a storm.
Towards the second half of the recital, the singer expressed his solidarity with Ukraine, a nation invaded by Russia, by dedicating “Rhythm of my heart” to it, wearing a yellow shirt and blue jacket, the colors of that country’s flag.
“No war,” the artist said, backing up a black-and-white photo of a child with those words.
“Young turks”, “Maggie May” and “Have i told you lately” were part of the selection of songs chosen by Rod for the night in which he showed that age does not prevent him from doing anything.
