Rockstar Games continues the traditional approach of only announcing their games on consoles. Grand Theft Auto VI it was only confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S for 2025, but it’s more than clear to everyone that it will come to PC later. A former employee of this well-known studio explains how they approach platforms at Rockstar.
Mike York worked at Rockstar Games on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption II as an animator, specifically in the Rockstar New England team in Andover, USA until 2017. So he is not involved in GTA 6, but he is convinced that since then nothing much has changed in society. According to York, at Rockstar, they prioritize the best-selling platforms. At that time, the most important was PlayStation, then Xbox and only third was PC.
York reminds that after for many years everyone played on the PlayStation, that’s why Rockstar had Sony’s console as the main platform for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Only after that was the Xbox and somewhere in the background was the PC.

For GTA 5, the PS3 system was preferred, a port for Xbox 360 was in development at the same time, but they tried to get out of the PS3 the most. “It was a better piece of hardware in many ways at the time, and we optimized the game mainly for that platform,” York explains of the PlayStation 3 preference in his video on YouTube. “We ported the PS3 version to the Xbox 360 and checked how it worked. During all this time, the PC version has existed somewhere in the background and is only in third place.”
At Rockstar, they are aware of the complexity of the PC version. It is much harder for PCs to tune the game due to the huge number of different hardware configurations. It requires more funding and a longer testing phase to ensure high quality. That’s why GTA 5 was released first on PS3 and Xbox 360, then on PS4 and Xbox One, and only then came the PC version, almost two years after the first versions.
At the same time, the developer draws attention to advantages of the PC version over the console versions. A PC is usually more powerful, so developers can add more graphical effects, increase the number of NPCs in specific scenes, or improve the quality of vegetation.
