Rockstar cancels unplayable update to Read Dead Online

Rockstar deployed version 1.21 of Red Dead Redemption 2 at the beginning of August. This update, supposed to correct some bugs for the online part of the game, itself caused a number of problems. The studio ultimately decided to cancel the update and revert to the previous version, even though it was not optimal.

Although these are not his only two licenses, Rockstar is known for the series Grand Theft Auto (or GTA), whose last opus sold particularly well, and Red Dead Redemption (or RDR). On these two series, the American studio, a subsidiary of Take Two Interactive, pays particular attention to its work, because their latest opuses are accompanied by an online multiplayer part which brings in a lot of money. Updates are therefore frequent in order to improve and enrich the gameplay and make players want to come back (and especially not to go snooping around PUBG, Apex Legends or Fortnite).

Given the stakes, Rockstar’s recent mishap with Red Dead Online, the multiplayer mode of Red Dead Redemption, is quite amazing. And yet, the information is confirmed by the studio itself on its website dedicated to technical support. It all starts with update 1.20. It is long awaited, because it brings in particular a new profession for the players: the Naturalist. The image that accompanies this article illustrates precisely this new “career”.

A fix that does more harm than good

On July 28, the update rolls out to PC, Xbox One, PS4 and is even coming to Stadia. The list of changes is extensive (weapons, clothing, wild animals, events, missions, etc.) and some gameplay improvements have even been incorporated. Only, as always, bugs appeared with version 1.20. On August 10, Rockstar is deploying a new numbered update 1.21. And things are going badly.

By applying the patch, which was supposed to refine the gameplay of version 1.20, players noticed a number of bugs: problem with connecting to servers, no more NPCs in towns, extremely rare wild animals for the Naturalist, horses and carriages bizarre behavior. Bug reports have multiplied so much that Rockstar announces this week that patch 1.21 is canceled and that the game will revert to version 1.20, which the developer says is stable enough to play while waiting for a new patch.

Surprisingly, the game only appears to be downgraded to version 1.20 on console. Indeed, in a message posted on Twitter and on its technical support site, Rockstar confirms that the return to the previous version only concerns the PS4 and the Xbox One.
