Last week saw an interesting twist in the years-long “feud” between modders and Rockstar, i.e. Take-Two, when modding group Cfx.re officially became part of the studio. Since this unexpected collaboration, many players are hoping for official roleplay servers in the future, for example directly in GTA VI, but this certainly does not mean that everything would be suddenly banished and the authors of all kinds of game mods from Rockstar and Take-Two should not have worried. This time, the company tapped the creators of the Sentient Streets mod for GTA V.
Behind the Sentient Streets modification was a well-respected modder and veteran in the community with the nickname Bloc, who decided to revive the streets of Los Santos with the help of AI, but at the same time offer an interesting new story line. In his mod, players became a novice police officer who embarked on an investigation of a conspiracy related paradoxically to artificial intelligence, which is greatly feared and worshiped by a strange cult. However, at the same time, for the benefit of the mod, the AI was preparing dialogs for the NPCs so that they could be interacted with like real people. Bloc has made it possible to openly converse with around 30 NPCs in real-time using Inworld’s Character Engine, which aims to create more believable interactions and thus the entire game world. Unfortunately, there will be no improvements and further development within the mod.
Bloc published their Sentient Streets on NexusMods where it was already downloaded from, as well as his video introducing the mod, its capabilities and also the installation process, can no longer be played on YouTube, as the content is claimed by Take-Two due to copyright. The modder commented on this in post directly to YouTube, where he stated that after contacting Take-Two, he learned that this was not an error or an automatic claim, but that his video and mod had indeed been suspended directly by the publisher. The mod was still available on gta5mods, from where he preferred to delete it himself. As a long-time fan of the series, he considers the whole process to be “hostile and depressing”, while he would have appreciated some previous communication, at the same time noting that his modification was available completely free and open-source.
Bloc has no intention of trying to appeal as an individual modder, as he understands that it would be pointless, and he doesn’t want to spend his time doing it. However, he is not aware that he is in the wrong, as the mod neither used the GTA V dubbing nor included a link to his Patreon under it. However, it is well known from many cases in the past that Take-Two is not very fond of modders and that they do not always allow interference in the game, although it often helps the game. Bloc is thus another of the many modders who have come across games not only from Rockstar, and in this case, according to Bloc’s statement, the community will most likely lose another creator of modifications.
At the end of his report, he quoted a sentence from FAQ Rockstar regarding roleplay servers: “Rockstar Games has always believed in the reasonable creativity of fans and wanted creators to show their passion for our games.” However, in the original post, we read that everything has its limits and that the company can object to a third-party project at any time . And that’s exactly what happened now.
