Rockfall on state road 18 in Calabria, Anas closes section

(ANSA) – SCILLA, 31 AUG – A significant fall of large rocks has prompted Anas to close a section of state road 18 between Santa Trada and Scilla, in the province of Reggio Calabria, to traffic. “Since the first signs of avalanches were recorded by Anas supervisors who monitor the road daily – a company statement reports – traffic was blocked and diverted to a bypass on the A2 motorway, which runs parallel to the state road. After the first rock-clearing activities, the climbers verified the stability of the slope and detected the presence of numerous unstable cyclopean rocks trapped by rockfall nets. The area and the cliff downstream from the road were therefore isolated and the unstable rocks were demolished in a controlled manner”. “The safety measures – Anas adds – will continue until the critical situation is completely resolved, before the state road is reopened to traffic”.
