The number of potential buyers for the Washington Commanders continues to grow.
Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta has made an offer of about $5.5 billion to try to secure the commanders, according to The Washington Post.
Dan Snyder, the beleaguered Commanders owner since 1999, is after around $6 billion, which puts Feritta’s offer below the asking price to buy the NFL franchise.
Fertitta, who bought the Rockets in 2017, toured the commanders facility earlier this month and, despite the offer, isn’t considered the favorite to buy the team, according to The Washington Post.
The 65-year-old has competition — Josh Harris, owner of the 76ers and New Jersey Devils, also placed a bet. If one of the two wins the auction, they will be the fourth owner to control both an NBA and NFL team.
Jeff Bezos, a Snyder rival, was reportedly barred from making a bid, although the Amazon founder wanted to buy the team. The Commanders owner is reportedly still upset by a Bezos-owned Washington Post investigation and subsequent stories published about Snyder and other Commanders bosses who allegedly enabled a toxic work culture, including sexual harassment.
After the exposition, Snyder took a step back from the franchise and his wife Tanya became the public face of the Commanders.
The Snyders later announced that they planned to sell the Commanders after hiring Bank of America in November 2022.
The NFL owners’ meeting in March will decide the commanders’ future. It’s unclear whether the Snyders plan to sell the entire franchise or just part of it.
