Israeli Army Radio reported an attempt by armed men from the Gaza Strip to infiltrate nearby Israeli areas, where residents were asked to close their homes.
The Israeli army announced that sirens were sounding in areas near the Gaza Strip and Tel Aviv, to warn of a missile attack.
Reuters reported that explosions were heard in areas surrounding Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
A subsequent official statement confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a meeting with senior security officials in the coming hours.
