Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired rockets at targets in Israel this morning. Warning sirens went off in several cities across the country, the military said. The rocket alarm was also heard in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and there were reports of explosions. A Hamas leader has said that there is a new military operation against Israel.
A woman was reportedly killed in southern Israel and a man was injured by shrapnel.
Hamas has claimed the attack. The leader of the military branch speaks of a new military operation with the name Operation al-Aqsa storm. Mohammed Deif says 5,000 rockets have been fired into Israel since this morning. “We have decided to say: enough is enough,” Deif said in a statement. Israel responded by saying it was ready for a counter operation. The army has now reportedly started an operation in the Gaza Strip.
Speed consultation
Israeli residents near the Gaza border have been asked to stay indoors because Palestinian militants may have crossed the border. Details about the threat have not been released.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announces that he will hold security consultations later in the day with representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the army. Israel currently celebrates the Jewish festival of Simchat Torah (Joy of the Torah), which celebrates the Jewish people’s entrustment of the Torah.
The rocket launches come after weeks of heightened tensions along Israel’s border with Gaza, and heavy fighting in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Nearly 200 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military attacks since the beginning of this year.
Israel says the raids target militants, but stone-throwing protesters and people not involved in the violence have also been killed. Palestinian attacks on Israeli targets have killed more than thirty people.
