Rock fall on Lake Garda: via ferrata affected@zwischenHeadlineTag>
The via ferrata “Ferrata Ernesto Che Guevara” had been closed since 2021 due to falling rocks and an impending rock fall, but was still used in isolated cases. Repairs were carried out but were not completed due to renewed winter damage.
On Friday, September 22nd, the loose rock above the municipality of Pietramurata came loose: chunks of stone thundered from the rock face of Monte Casale into the depths and onto the via ferrata. The rock fall, which according to a report from ladige.it was probably facilitated by bad weather, occurred in the first part of the via ferrata.
The damage should be assessed promptly by the fire department and experts from the geological service of the Province of Trento and further security measures should be taken.

Monte Casale is a 1632 meter high mountain in the Lake Garda Mountains in Trentino, Italy. The mountain rises with an approximately 1,400 meter high east face above Pietramurata, a district of the municipality of Dro in the Sarca Valley. The north side of the mountain slopes relatively steeply down to the Sarca Valley. The summit has a flat plateau with the now closed Rifugio Don Zio Pisoni hut.
The via ferrata through the east face of Monte Casale is home to one of the most beautiful and longest via ferratas in the Italian Alps: the “Ferrata Ernesto Che Guevara”. The route is less challenging with difficulty (C), but more with its climbing length of 1,200 meters in around four hours of climbing time. Long secured wire rope passages with clamps alternate with easy walking terrain until you are rewarded at the summit with a fantastic view of Lake Garda and the high Alpine mountain landscape.
