Amsterdam housing corporation Rochdale installs security cameras at the money exchange office of Suri-Change in Amsterdam Southeast. The corporation wants to reassure tenants who live near the branch. There have been three explosions at the office in the past week.
The cameras are located in containers that are normally found on construction sites. The cameras turn on when they detect movement.
“We know our tenants are very concerned,” said a spokesman for Rochdale. “This is a preventative measure so people know there is CCTV.”
The municipality is aware of the cameras and the images are destroyed after a week. “But if something happens again, we will hand over the images to the police.”
The last explosion at the office in Amsterdam Southeast was in the night from Wednesday to Thursday. The building was damaged, but no injuries were reported. The money exchange office was already closed by then. Just like all other branches in the capital. The offices in The Hague and Rotterdam have also been closed for days by order of the mayors.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced on Thursday that no suspects have been detained in the investigation into Suri-Change. Five people were arrested on March 27 in Rotterdam, Barendrecht and Rhoon. “They were briefly detained after their arrest, but are all free pending prosecution.” They are suspected of involvement in large-scale underground banking and the laundering of criminal money, which may have been earned in the cocaine trade.
