Robots in Healthcare: BayCare’s Integration in Temple Terrace, Florida

Robots are becoming an integral part of various industries, including healthcare and emergency response. In an effort to enhance quality and efficiency, BayCare has introduced 25 robots at its BayCare Integrated Service Center (BISC) in Temple Terrace, Florida. The massive distribution center, spanning 258,000 square feet, serves 16 BayCare hospitals as well as multiple outpatient centers and doctor’s offices.

The robots have been integrated into the picking areas of the service center, where items for orders are selected by hand and placed into gray tubs before being forwarded to the packing and shipping area. Contrary to initial skepticism, these robots have not rendered human workers obsolete. Instead, they assist the staff by carrying the selected items and navigating independently to retrieve the next supply needed. The efficiency of the picking area has nearly doubled since the introduction of the robots.

Originally, there were concerns among the workers about potential job loss. However, they soon realized that the robots could not perform their tasks without human technicians picking and counting the items required for each order. The robots excel at carrying heavy loads, thereby reducing the physical strain on the staff. Moreover, they have helped mitigate labor shortages, which many industries are currently facing.

The distribution technicians at BISC assemble an impressive 12,000 orders every day. The supplies dispatched from the center play a crucial role in saving lives on a daily basis. By implementing robots at the service center, BayCare has successfully improved efficiency, organization, and worker satisfaction.
