The system was modified
The robots have been in use in the distribution center for around five years. The operator recently rebuilt the sorting system to make it more efficient. Problems then arose because, according to the report, the robot should have been put into operation two days earlier. The victim was an employee of the company that installed the robot and was supposed to check the sensors.
The police suspect that the sensor mistook the man for a box and therefore grabbed him with its gripper. He injured his face and chest, writes Yonhap. The man was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.
To avoid incidents like this, robots in industry are usually isolated from people. However, accidents can occur. The cause usually lies on the human side.
In this case, the technician was probably late and the robot he was supposed to check was already in operation. The accident at the Volkswagen factory in Baunatal in 2015, in which a service technician was killed by a robot, also happened due to human error.
