Waymo’s autonomous robot taxis, which are supposed to be the pinnacle of modern technology, have turned into a nightmare in San Francisco. Local residents complain about the nuisance the sound of the night when cars are always honking and move into the parking lot. The purpose of the robot car is to warn the “careless driver”, which is meaningless and disturbing in this situation.
Horn blow at four in the morning
Among those affected by this is, for example, the software engineer Sophie Tung, who described how the sounds of taxis rang in her ears all night and disturbed her sleep, not even a dream. In the morning it was worse when autonomous cars got stuck in traffic and started respecting each other.
On Thursday, Tung posted a video titled “When it’s 4am but Wayma gets aggressive in the parking lot.” The video shows one of the autonomous taxis honking its horn as it waits to park behind another vehicle that is supporting it.
Rude neighbors
Naturally, journalists did not hesitate to contact Waymo to comment on these issues. A short statement read: “We are aware that our vehicles may sound their horn briefly while moving through parking areas in certain circumstances. We have identified the cause and are currently working on a solution.”
After the report, which was broadcast on Monday, August 12, Waymo responded with new information. They claim the honor is due to software designed to prevent accidents when driving slowly. For example, if someone is pulling out of a parking space and it can be assumed that they will not see the Waymo car, the autonomous device will honk its horn to make it known.
And that’s exactly what was happening in the park – robot taxis warned each other about the possibility of an accident by honking their horns. Waymo now preparing a software update that should fix the problem.
