And the protagonists of the story, Olivia de Havilland, Audrey Hepburn, Uma Thurman or Kate Blanchett, are not far behind. The good thief who steals from the rich and distributes among the poor, becomes a benchmark for those who oppose the unjust power represented by the Sheriff of Nottingham, making his work as a tax collector not as placid as it could be.
The figure of Robin has given wings to justify that it can be taken from the one who has to share with the one who has the least. This, which has a moral justification, is only faced with the problem of where to put the limit of who is considered to have it. This is why the rules must be established so that there is no discretion by which, subjectively, you can establish your criteria. Thus, if we extrapolate the figure of Robin Hood to our days, it may be that for those who see Robin in certain people, others can identify the Sheriff of Nottingham. There would be arguments to defend one position and the opposite. If you’re the one dealing with the Sheriff of Nottingham, you’ll be wanting Robin to come and defend you. Conversely, if you’re not among the lucky ones to get a piece of the loot, you’ll want to put the money running around you to a better end. In Robin’s time, anyone who opposed royal edicts was considered an outlaw. Today, theoretically, anyone who commits a crime has the right to a fair trial and, only when there is a final judgment, can we say that he is a criminal.
