Robin Gosens (29) aims for return to German national team after solid season at 1. FC Union – Will he stay or leave?

Great honor for Robin Gosens (29).

After 1. FC Union’s 0-0 draw in Frankfurt, the defender was a guest on ZDF’s “Aktuelle Sportstudio” in nearby Mainz. Gosens came into conversation after his recent non-nomination for the national team for the European Championships in the summer.

Union’s best goalscorer (6 goals): “I have to honestly say that I don’t feel miles away from the national team. I’m having a good, solid and consistent season. I was able to perform despite difficult moments for the team. I will continue to do that as long as the door to the national team is open.”

Gosens has played 20 international matches so far, with more to follow. Problem: Union will most likely not play internationally next season. A big obstacle for the left-back on his way back to the DFB team. Gosens: “It is clear that there is not only the European Championship, but also the 2026 World Cup. I would like to recommend myself for them. The fact is that you have to play at the top level to do that.”

Gosens therefore does not rule out saying goodbye. He says: “My ambition is to reach the highest level for me. After the season we will reflect and see what is the right thing to do. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m saying goodbye after one season, absolutely not.” But it’s also not a commitment to staying in Köpenick.

BILD knows: Gosens was offered to Dortmund and Wolfsburg before the season, but both clubs did not take up the Inter Milan star. Gosens is under contract with Union until 2028. It is unclear whether there are exit clauses. There should also be clubs that want to cover his transfer fee. Union is said to have paid around 12 million euros for him.

If Gosens leaves after the season, Union’s journey with expensive new signings would finally be over. Of the summer signings, defender Leonardo Bonucci (36/Fenerbahce Istanbul) and attacker David Datro Fofana (21/Chelsea ended loan) had already disappeared again in January 2024.

Gosens suspects: After participating in the Champions League once, Union will no longer be the first address for players who want to play at the top level.
