“My back problems – lower back pain – started five years ago. Had an MRI and found that one of those ‘pads’ between the bones had ‘exploded a bit’, so it was pressing on a nerve that went down to the leg,” in his characteristic Roberto begins in Latvian.
At that time, he seemed to successfully cope with physiotherapy, until this summer the pain made itself felt again. The pain could be tolerated for a while, but along with the pain, the foot also began to tingle. Doctors warned that it was more serious than he thought.
“The examination revealed that the displaced vertebra had pinched the spinal nerve ‘all the way’, which is very risky,” he explains. But even then, Roberto looked at it with a smile – continued to work and hoped that the medication and blockade injections would pass. When the surgeon seriously suggested that he schedule two months off soon to perform the operation, Roberto only promised to think about it.
The final “fall”, as he says, in making the decision was on November 2. That day he went to the program “Say it out loud!” filming. “I entered the makeup room, Elina was standing there [ētera partnere Elīna Fīrmane], and I worried that I wouldn’t be able to film anyway. From my face, it was clearly visible to all colleagues. When I got up from the chair, I couldn’t feel my leg anymore, I tried to kick it forward, but without feeling any support, I fell. It’s good that little Elina was right next to me and caught me, I would have “flew away”…” Roberto does not hide.
Roberto was immediately taken to the hospital. “The shock of not feeling my leg anymore made me understand that I had no choice – it was time for surgery.” The operation was performed on November 6.
He is currently in the “Vaivari” rehabilitation center and is feeling very well after the operation. There is still a recovery period ahead.
