BVB, News: Matthäus not completely convinced by Emre Can
Emre Can is controversial as captain of Borussia Dortmund – and record national player Lothar Matthäus is not completely convinced by the 30-year-old. “He doesn’t have the standing with the fans that a captain should actually have. Namely, being untouchable, like Marco Reus was, for example,” Matthäus wrote in his Sky-Column: “He hasn’t always played outstandingly lately, but he had the status among fans and those in charge: ‘You are our captain!'”
If coach Nuri Sahin Can were to take away the captain’s armband, “that would cause unrest again at the moment,” Matthäus continued: “But it’s no use if a captain is constantly criticized, sometimes rightly so.” He cited as examples Sky-Expert Can’s performance in the 1:2 at FC Augsburg and previously in the 2:5 in the Champions League at Real Madrid.
“I actually always thought Can was a player you needed in the six position: experienced, without fear and with a certain speed. But he often lacks concentration and in Madrid in the running duel against Vinicius Junior he ultimately lacked it Attitude was missing,” said Matthäus: “That’s not meant against Can, but if I came in five minutes earlier and the other player has already been on the pitch for 80 minutes, then I have to march the last ten meters. That’s one It’s a matter of attitude and I have to blame Emre for that.”
At BVB, Sahin rotates in the Cans position in front of the defense. Here Matthew called for clarity. “Sahin has to say to two of them: ‘You are my man!’. Trying to please everyone doesn’t work,” wrote the 63-year-old: “The coach has to make decisions. Not for the players, but for the team and the club.”
