The Divine Codino’s homage to “his friend of many battles and as many wounds”. Because it was Rombo di Tuono who hugged him when he missed the penalty in the 1994 World Cup final
January 23 – 11.33pm – MILAN
Roberto Baggio and Gigi Riva were friends. Rombo di Tuono was the head of the delegation of the Italian national team and it was he who embraced the Divine Codino after his missed penalty in Pasadena, in the 1994 World Cup final in the United States. Now, there are bonds that go beyond that between the two former footballers he was. For this and a thousand other reasons Baggio wanted to write an open letter to his friend at Ansa.
It is his tribute to a man he has always admired: “Dear Gigi, friend of many battles and just as many wounds…”, his message begins thus, “I have never forgotten those moments and that embrace. Life brought us together on his journey, experienced by us with so much love and infinite passion for the most beautiful game in the world. You were a unique and precious example of great humility. You were for me a beautiful example of coherence and attachment to the shirt, of sincere courage. You loved the land that adopted you like no other. You were able to transform your suffering and pain into positive redemption.”

THAT ROLL OF THUNDER
—
“You have been a wise and precious traveling companion – continues Baggio -, you have always been yourself on and off the pitch. You have been something unique and unforgettable, just as I am sure that unique and unforgettable will be that ‘roll of thunder’ that will be able to welcome you on your celestial journey, where I hope you will soon meet those you loved and lost too soon. I love you, Roberto Baggio”.
