The announcement came, according to AFP, after Ukraine’s security service SBU announced on Tuesday that it had uncovered a Russian plot to assassinate Zelensky and other high-ranking officials.
The SBU said it had arrested two colonels of the bodyguard division on suspicion of passing secret information to the Russian security service FSB.
Another of them is suspected of supplying rocket launchers, drones and anti-personnel mines to the agent for the attacks. Rud had been leading the department since 2019. The bodyguard department oversees the personal security of the president, other high-ranking officials and their families.
Zelenskyi has been the target of a Russian assassination attempt since the beginning of the war of aggression in 2022. He said last year that he knew of at least “five or six” failed assassination plots against him.
