“You’re not here. Here. Already. But where you are, you make the world smile. And I’ll smile. But tomorrow. Not today. Tonight is an evening without you, my love. The first of the rest of my life. Robert Smoktunowicz. 1962-2024,” wrote Marzena Gajewska in a post posted late Monday evening.
Robert Smoktunowicz, whose political career is primarily associated with his two terms in the Senate, went down in history not only as a politician, but also as an active participant in the student movements of the 1980s at the University of Warsaw. He was a co-founder of the Real Politics Movement, which under the leadership of Janusz Korwin-Mikke was transformed into the Real Politics Union.
His career path is not limited to politics. Smoktunowicz, after graduating from law studies at the University of Warsaw and completing his attorney training, began practicing as an attorney in 1991. He was also a legal advisor to the Italian Embassy in Poland, and supported Andrzej Olechowski during the 2000 election campaign.
Smoktunowicz was associated with the Civic Platform as a legal expert and a member of the national council. His involvement in politics did not cease even after leaving the PO ranks in 2007. Attempts to return to the Senate as a non-party candidate, and later, in 2015, as an independent, did not bring him re-election.
