As noted DW, obtaining the status of blessed is the first step towards canonization. In 1990, parishioners of Schumann’s native diocese of the French city of Metz sent a number of documents with a corresponding demand to the Vatican Commission for Canonization.
Schumann was born in Luxembourg in 1886 and was a citizen of the German Empire. After France ceded the Lorraine region in 1918, Schumann adopted French citizenship.
In 1940, Schumann was arrested by the German occupation administration for resisting the policies of the Nazi authorities. The politician was imprisoned, escaped from it and became a member of the Resistance movement.
In 1946 and 1947, Schumann served as Minister of Finance of France. From November 1947 to July 1948, and from August to September 1948, he headed the country’s government. From 1948 to 1952, Schumann served as head of the French Foreign Ministry, from 1955 to 1956 – Minister of Justice, from 1958 to 1960 – Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of the European Council. Schumann died in 1963.
It is believed that Schumann’s speech, delivered by him on May 9, 1950, and containing a project for the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, marked the beginning of the creation of the European Union.
