The movie screen transforms into a television that broadcasts images from the 70s. We see the riots that took place in several North American cities to protest the Vietnam War. The announcer says: “Three suspects have managed to escape after killing a security guard during a robbery at a Michigan bank. The FBI has given the names of Mimi Lurie, Nicholas Sloan and Sharon Solarz, all members of the group Wather Underground“. Back in the present, the unmistakable silhouette of Susan Sarandon appears to us in front of the window, her gaze lost. She is a housewife who, with a simple gesture, says goodbye to her husband because she knows that, as soon as he goes out the street, the FBI is going to arrest her.
This fact will cause a chain reaction of unexpected consequences. One of them will impact Jim Grant, played by Robert Redford, a lawyer who lives peacefully pampering his granddaughter, until his peaceful life becomes complicated when journalist Ben Shepard reveals his secret.: He is a former radical anti-war who is wanted for murder. With the FBI hot on his trail, Grant sets out on a race against time to find the only person who can prove his story. The memories reopen wounds he thought closed and confront him with his own past and Shepard, played by Shia LaBeouf.
Robert Redford, a grandfather with two faces
He is an icon of cinema, a living myth, a great movie star. Robert Redford has played all kinds of roles, but over the years he left romantic characters to delve into spy stories and action thrillers. He was 65 years old when he played a veteran CIA agent about to retire in spy game and a decade later, at the age of 76, he played Jim Granthe fugitive pursued by the FBI. “I guess you could say it’s a classic drama, a story, a character and an emotion arranged in a very clear pattern so the audience can follow it,” he told Variety about the eighth film he directed.
As the magazine says, Reviewing his films serves to learn about the history of the United States, revealing its lights and shadows, its moral dilemma and the sins of power. Tto how we were (the Hollywood blacklist), Quiz Show (the television game show scandal of the 1950s), The conspirator (Lincoln’s death, All the president’s men (Watergate) or Lions for lambs (the war conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq). “Redford has returned again and again to that no man’s land, the one between what America is truly like and how she sees herself,” Variety said.
The Julie Christie a Nick Nolte
The cast of the film, shot in Canada, is fabulous. Along with Redford are great actresses like Susan Sarandon and Julie Christie and the great Chris Cooperall with at least one Oscar. With them we see Hollywood celebrities like Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Terrence Howard y Stanley Tucci who, curiously, opted for the statuette. Pact of Silence is, for now, Julie Christie’s last appearance in the cinema, although we hear her voice, as narrator, in The bookstore, by Isabel Coixet. His presence is a plus for the film, as is that of Nick Nolte, another Hollywood legend.
The connections of pact of silence
Robert Redford and Nick Nolte worked together again years later, it was A walk through the forest but they are not the only actors who ‘share’ a film: Redford and Chris Cooper were brothers The man who whispered to the horses; We saw Shia LaBeouf and Susan Sarandon in Wall Street: money never sleepsand the actress had met Nick Nolte years before, when they filmed The oil of life. But Susan Sarandon’s career is so extensive that she has had the opportunity to work with many Hollywood stars and in Shall we dance? filmed with Stanley Tucci and Richard Jenkins.
pact of silence now comes to RTVE Play, which increases its entertainment offer with new content: Hollywood classics like Citizen Kane, European cinema like Last night in Milan and Spanish cinema, with titles such as Cliff, The cover, The education of fairiesKamchatka, Dame Veneno.
By the characters. How do you both believe the film touches on the relevance of these dilemmas in today’s society?
Interview: Two Guests Discussion on ‘The Company You Keep’ Movie
Guest 1: Robert Redford, a legendary actor and director who starred in and directed the movie “The Company You Keep.”
Guest 2: Susan Sarandon, an esteemed actress known for her roles in many hit Hollywood movies and also featured in “The Company You Keep.”
Interviewer: Hello, I’m excited to talk with both of you about your latest film ”The Company You Keep.” To start with, Mr. Redford, you play a character who is a former anti-war radical turned lawyer. Can you tell us how you prepared for this role and what attracted you to the character?
Robert Redford: Well, I’ve always been interested in the gray areas of life where people have to make tough choices between what’s right and what’s wrong. With this character Jim Grant, there’s a lot of complexity to him. He’s lived with this secret for decades, trying to lead a normal life, but then circumstances force him back into the world he thought he’d left behind. I found that very intriguing. As for preparation, I spent time researching the era of the Vietnam War and the radical movements that emerged during that time. It was important for me to understand the mindset of someone who would take such drastic action for what they believed in.
Interviewer: Interesting. Ms. Sarandon, you play a character who must deal with her husband’s sudden arrest and the secrets he’d been hiding. Can you share some insights into your character’s journey and how you approached it?
Susan Sarandon: My character is someone who’s lived a very sheltered life, focused on her family and her routine. When she finds out about her husband’s past, it throws everything into chaos. She’s forced to confront not just his actions but also her own complicity in their relationship. It was challenging to portray this woman’s emotional journey from shock and betrayal to understanding and ultimately, acceptance. I did a lot of research on women who were involved with radical groups during that time period and their struggles to reconcile their past actions with their present lives.
Interviewer: One of the themes in the movie is the moral dilemmas faced
