While the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony was held this Sunday, rewarding in particular the best players, coaches and football teams, the Portuguese was once again distinguished.
The former Sporting CP player, from Manchester United and you Real Madrid was named the best player of the 21st century, in particular ahead of his lifelong rival, Lionel Messi. The end of the debate between the two football monsters? Everyone will be free to judge …
Since the start of his career at Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo has continued to break an incredible number of records while offering himself an impressive track record. Triple championEngland with Manchester United, double champion ofSpain with Real Madrid, double champion ofItaly with the Juventus.
The Portuguese also won five Champions League (with the Red Devils in 2008 then four with Real: 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018). A competition in which he is also – by far – the top scorer in history, with no less than 135 goals in 178 games since his debut on the European scene.
On the selection side too, Ronaldo managed to bring back a first trophy in the history of Portugal with the Euro gleaned in France in 2016, despite an injury at the start of the final against the Blues. Regarding the world Cup, he has never managed to go further than the semi-finals, and will have a new (last?) opportunity to place his country on the roof of the football world in two years at the Qatar.
To all this must be added the five Ballon d’Or awarded to CR7 since the start of his career, the second most awarded player behind Messi and his six trophies.
The Globe Soccer Awards also named a best team of the century. Here again, Madrid is in the spotlight as Real (six Champions Leagues since 2000) have been rewarded.
On the coach side, however, honor to Barcelona in particular, but also to the Bayern Munich and to Manchester City with Pep Guardiola. The passage of the Catalan technician at Barça largely marked the spirits, before continuing to stack the titles in Germany and now in England.
Without much surprise, Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski was voted player of the year which will end in a few days. His club, which won everything in Germany and Europe, was also crowned club of the year during the same ceremony, which took place in Dubai.
