Paulo Sousa’s decision caused consternation among many fans. The Portuguese on Sunday, December 26, informed Cezary Kulesza that he had received an attractive offer from Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and wanted to terminate the contract with the Polish Football Association. The Portuguese thus quit his job with the White and Reds three months before the decisive fights for promotion to the World Cup in Qatar.
– At first I was wondering if it was even true? It was definitely a shock, a disappointment, especially since I didn’t get any signals before. We did not talk to the selector about this. It was a huge disappointment for me. I got the news when I landed in Dubai and it basically happened on the way to the hotel. One of my friends said that such information appeared. I was wondering if these were media rumors, but a day later everything became official – said Robert Lewandowski with great bitterness in an interview with Viaplay after Friday’s Bundesliga match with Borussia Moenchengbadbach.
Lewandowski admitted that the Portuguese coach did not contact him after making the shocking decision and leaving our team.
– I was in Dubai then and I did not feel the need to contact the coach. It was the coach who decided. How all of this has been resolved leaves much to be desired. This is the worst situation in this situation – added the Bayern Munich player.
The captain of Biało-Czerwonych emphasizes that he is in contact with the president of the Polish Football Association, Cezary Kulesza, who consulted the most experienced representatives when choosing a new coach. However, the decisive word will belong to the helmsman of Polish football.
– We are in touch, but at the end, the president knows which coach to choose. It’s his headache, but I’m trying to look for the positives. Maybe this impulse will give us more faith that we can play football better and look better as a team – added Lewandowski. – I am not a memorable man, but there are also no irreplaceable people. The new manager will have to make decisions quickly. We know what we are playing for, but this is not the time and place for big changes. The sooner a decision is made who will take over the team, the better for us and the coach himself. How all this is dealt with through the media hurts us all the most. However, we must look to the future and to what lies ahead.
The 33-year-old, however, drew attention to what the president of the Polish Football Association should be guided by when choosing a new coach.
– Looking at how little training we have left, it is important that the coach knows the players and what to do, but not to change too much. Now the play-offs are the most important, they should be the priority. There is always uncertainty at the beginning, but now there is no time for rearrangements and deliberations. We have to catch common ideas and plans together with the new coach – added Lewandowski.
In the first match for league points in 2022, the Bavarians lost to Borussia Moenchengladbach 1: 2 on Friday evening. Looking through the prism of the situation in the Bundesliga table, this result is quite a surprise, but when we delve into the staffing problems of the German champions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we already have a completely different picture. The coronavirus has devastated Julian Nagelsmann’s team so much that in recent days Bayern players have even trained with … an eight-person squad.
– It was hard to prepare for this match. Half of the squad was basically pulled down from vacation on Thursday, and in fact, there were seven or eight of us in training at one point. It was a strange week, we tried to focus on this match and prepare for it as optimally as possible. I met some of the players on Thursday for the first time. Despite the staffing problems, we could even win this match – Lewandowski noted.
